The Perspective of a Russian Immigrant Dec 11

The Perspective Of A Russian Immigrant

In the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, I was taught to believe individual pursuits are selfish and sacrificing for the collective good is noble.

In kindergarten we sang songs about Lenin, the leader of the Socialist Revolution. In school we learned about the beautiful socialist system, where everybody is equal and everything is fair; about ugly capitalism, where people are exploited and treat each other like wolves in the wilderness.

Life in the USSR modeled the socialist ideal. God-based religion was suppressed and replaced with cultlike adoration for political figures.

The government-assigned salary of the proletariat (blue-collar worker) was 30%-50% higher than any professional. Without incentive to improve their life, professionals drank themselves to oblivion. They — engineers, lawyers, doctors, teachers — earned a government-determined salary that barely covered the necessities, mainly food.

Raising children was a hardship. It took four to six adults (parents and grandparents) to support a child. The usual size of the postwar family was one or two children. Every woman had the right to have an abortion and most of them did, often without anesthesia.

There is a comparative historical reality that plays out the consequences of two competing ideologies: life in the USSR and in America.

When the march to the worker’s paradise — the Socialist Revolution — began in 1917, many people emigrated from Russia to the U.S.

In the USSR, economic equality was achieved by redistributing wealth, ensuring that everyone remained poor, with the exception of those doing the redistributing. Only the ruling class of communist leaders had access to special stores, medicine and accommodations that could compare to those in the West.

The rest of the citizenry had to deal with permanent shortages of food and other necessities, and had access to free but inferior, unsanitary and low-tech medical care. The egalitarian utopia of equality, achieved by the sacrifice of individual self-interest for the collective good, led to corruption, black markets, anger and envy.

Government-controlled health care destroyed human dignity.

Chairman Nikita Khrushchev released facts about Stalin and his purges. People learned of the horrific purge of more than 20 million citizens, murdered as enemies of the state.

Those who left Russia found a different set of values in America: freedom of religion, speech, individual pursuits, the right to private property and free enterprise. The majority of those immigrants achieved a better life for themselves and their children in this capitalist land.

These opportunities let the average immigrant live a better life than many elites in the Soviet Communist Party. The freedom to pursue personal self-interest led to prosperity. Prosperity generated charity, benefiting the collective good. The descendants of those immigrants are now supporting policies that move America away from the values that gave so many immigrants the chance of a better life. Policies such as nationalized medicine, high tax rates and government intrusion into free enterprise are being sold to us under the socialistic motto of collective salvation. Socialism has bankrupted and failed every society, while capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system.

There is no perfect society. There are no perfect people. Critics say that greed is the driving force of capitalism. My answer is that envy is the driving force of socialism. Change to socialism is not an improvement on the imperfections of the current system. The slogans of “fairness and equality” sound better than the slogans of capitalism. But unlike at the beginning of the 20th century, when these slogans and ideas were yet to be tested, we have accumulated history and reality. Today we can define the better system not by slogans, but by looking at the accumulated facts. We can compare which ideology leads to the most oppression and which brings the most opportunity.

When I came to America in 1980 and experienced life in this country, I thought it was fortunate that those living in the USSR did not know how unfortunate they were. Now in 2009, I realize how unfortunate it is that many Americans do not understand how fortunate they are. They vote to give government more and more power without understanding the consequences.

Navarre Private School Oct 15

Lighthouse Private Christian Academy Navarre FL (LPCA) is fully accredited by the prestigious Christian Schools of Florida. We are also a Gold Seal provider with the state of Florida.

Our commitment is to provide quality education while assisting families in fostering their child’s spiritual development. We seek to provide a learning environment with loving, positive teachers that reinforce Christian principles. In combination with a Christian instructional curriculum, we give students the opportunity to experience hands-on learning and pursue their own open-ended research.

We have given the students the perfect environment for this type of “hyrbrid learning” as our school is located inside of the ZOO of Northwest Florida. We also have a beautiful preschool, founded on the same principles, that is located within walking distance of the Zoo.

LPCA’s approach provides a unique educational balance: structured curriculum interwoven with child-directed learning and firsthand observation. For example, although the children follow a schedule and curriculum as they would in a more traditional school, for part of each day, they can also watch chicks hatch, pet a camel or work with a biologist on learning about coral preservation.

The school focuses on strong, focused academics in the first 1/2 of the day. However, after lunch, the children can choose among various learning centers, whereby hands-on enrichment are used to teach lessons. On Wednesdays, the children have an animal encounter and are taken on a train ride throughout the beautiful acreage of the Zoo. On this day of the week, we concentrate on zoology, biology, geography, and a special Chapel time with a focus on appreciating God for the wonderful land and animals. It is a one-of-a-kind type of school environment that teaches children to respect and preserve our planet.

We believe in keeping our children happy while learning. After all, they are only this age for a short while. Because of the success that we have seen at LPCA, I will ensure that it continues to grow with our children.

We have openings for vpk, kindergarden and grades 1-5.

Give us a call at 850-916-0157

Support for Our Soldiers Jun 28

I’m sitting at the desk in my hotel room after just completing our 8 hour Troopathon at the Reagan Library. I’ve gone over and over in my head trying to figure out why this year even though we had a better set, added celebrities to our line up and had better media coverage that our final funds raised to support the troops was half of last years efforts.

I turn on the TV and click through the channels trying to find coverage of our days event. I had heard earlier in the day that Michael Jackson and Farah Fawcett had both died. As I clicked through the channels I found every single channel had coverage of Michael Jacksons death, even Fox News was covering it.

As I am not an “Idol” worshipper it always amazes me how engulfed people can get in the lives of celebrities. I have an “ah hah” moment and realize that could be part of the reason our event was not as successful as we had hoped for. We had lost viewers to the “Breaking News.”

Not one prone to want to listen for hours on end to all the hoopla of his death I opt to turn the TV off and lay my weary body to rest.

After arising today I turned the TV on and you guessed it almost every channel is still talking about Michael Jackson. The announcer is talking about all the crowds at the “Reagan” Memorial Hospital mourning his loss.

What a contrast, yesterday we were at the “Reagan” Library raising funds to support our troops and send care packages to the combat zone to let them know how much we appreciate and love them, and the rest of the world was focused on the news from Reagan Memorial Hospital that Michael Jackson was dead.

Our men and women are fighting selflessly to combat terrorism and defend our freedoms. These troops are willing to lay down their lives just like my son Marc Alan Lee did on Aug 2, 2006. These heroes aren’t begging for the world’s attention, they don’t seek to be recognized, honored, or worshipped, but we do need to remember them.

I thought about the world’s attention yesterday at the Reagan Memorial Hospital how engrossed they were in the death of Michael Jackson, my heart ached as I realized the priorities that most people have in life. How the media will dwell for weeks non-stop on Michael Jackson and his idiosyncrasies. My condolences go out to his family during this time of loss. I do understand the grief, the loss in losing someone you love so dearly.

This man may have entertained millions but did he do anything for their freedoms? He wasn’t willing to sacrifice his life for his buddies, for you or I as my son did, or as our troops, our true heroes are willing to if need be. Each one of our warriors who signed up to defend this nation have written a blank check to this nation and they are willing to pay what ever price is required for our freedoms including scarificing their life.

Why is the media not telling the stories of America’s Mighty Warriors, our troops? Why were people afraid to part with their money yesterday to send care packages to our warriors dodging bullets, IED’s and RPG’s yet they had no problem buying flowers and gifts, piling them at Michael Jackson’s home, at his Hollywood Star, the Reagan Hospital or other memorial sites around the world? Our priorities as a nation are so distorted.

For those of you who did participate and gave yesterday, THANK YOU! You understand the sacrifice our troops make and you have your priorities right.

Obviously since losing my son, Marc, not a day goes by that I don’t think of him and how he lived his life to the fullest. I think of the words on his headstone “Loved deeply, deeply loved” which so describe Marc. His last letter home has changed peoples lives all over the world. If you haven’t read that amazing letter you can read it in it’s entirety at www.americasmightywarriors.org
. If your moved by his letter please make a generous contribution by clicking on the donate button. He gave up his tomorrows so that you and I could have a today. Please be generous and do whatever you can for our troops, their families and the families of the fallen.

Marc wasn’t the only one with that attitude, I have seen the same character in our other brave warriors fighting for you and I. I always remember and pray for our troops who sacrifice so much for me and for this nation. They are the true heroes, they deserve our loyalty, our praise, our attention, our media focus. They need to know that we have not forgotten them. If you would still like to sponsor a care package and be part of the Troopathon 09 it’s not too late, you can do that at www.troopathon.org. How much more important to share the sentiments of your heart and your affections with someone who is living and fighting for your freedoms.

Please America check your priorities! We are a nation that was founded on God’s principles and we need to stay focused on what those are. May God continue to strengthen us and bless us as we follow Him.

Tickets on sale for Roy Jones’ bout Feb 11

Roy Jones wanted to make his boxing return to Pensacola a special event.

He’s hoping the first-ever joint venture between boxing and mixed martial arts provides that kind of breakthrough.

Jones, 40, a Washington High graduate, who remains one of boxing’s marquee names, presided today at a news conference at the Pensacola Civic Center to promote his March 21 fight card entitled “March Badness.” Viewers can watch a replay of the press conference at right.

The event at the Civic Center features Jones (52-5, 38 KOs), an eight-time world boxing champion, against Omar Sheika (27-8, 18 KOs.), a Patterson, N.J. resident, who fought for a world super middleweight title in 2000 and is well respected for his style.

“I love Pensacola and I’ve been wanting to bring a fight back here,” Jones said. “I think we’ve got a great lineup.”

In addition, the undercard will be headlined by three MMA fights featuring Seth “The Silverback” Petruzelli (10-4, 9KOs) from Fort Myers, who is coming off a national televised win against Kimbo Slice — the first loss of Slice’s career. Another MMA fight will feature Jeff “The Snowman” Monson of Olympia, Wash., who was recently featured in ESPN The Magazine as the most intimidating MMA fighter in the sport.

Tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. today and Civic Center officials were pleased with first-day sales. Tickets are priced from $28 to $128 seats at ringside. The event will be offered world wide on pay-per-view at $29.95 through In-Demand, Dish Network, DirectTV and on the Web through SecondsOut.com and MaxBoxing.com

“This is the kind of hybrid event that has never been done on this level,” said John Wirt, the chief promoter for Jones’ Square Ring Promotions Inc. “It’s really nice to be doing this on a national level from Pensacola, where Roy always wanted to come back and do a fight.”

Scientists Find New Creatures of Australian Deep Jan 19
by Amy Coopes Sat Jan 17, 11:13 pm ET

Scientists find new creatures of Australian deep
AFP/HO – One of Australia’s deepest residents a carnivorous sea squirt, or ascidian, standing half a meter …

SYDNEY (AFP) – Scientists said Sunday they had uncovered new marine animals in their search of previously unexplored Australian waters, along with a bizarre carnivorous sea squirt and ocean-dwelling spiders.

A joint US-Australian team spent a month in deep waters off the coast of the southern island of Tasmania to “search for life deeper than any previous voyage in Australian waters,” lead researcher Ron Thresher said.

What they found were not only species new to science — including previously undescribed soft corals — but fresh indications of global warming’s threat to the country’s unique marine life.

“Our sampling documented the deepest known Australian fauna, including a bizarre carnivorous sea squirt, sea spiders and giant sponges, and previously unknown marine communities dominated by gooseneck barnacles and millions of round, purple-spotted sea anemones,” Thresher said.

Using a submersible car-sized robot named Jason, the team explored a rift in the earth’s crust known as the Tasman Fracture Zone, a sheer two kilometre (1.24 mile) drop to 4,000 metres (13,200 feet) below the ocean’s surface.

Blogging on board the ship, researcher Adam Subhas said the team witnessed some “cool biology” as they descended the fracture, including the sea squirt, which he described as “basically an underwater Venus fly trap, but much bigger.”

The sea squirt, also known as an ascidian, stands 50 centimetres tall on the sea floor at a depth of just over 4,000 metres. It traps prey in its funnel-like front section if they touch it when they swim past.

“The geology was fascinating too — the sediment was incredibly fine and lightly packed; it made me think of powder snow,” Subhas wrote.

Fossil coral fields were found, dating back more than 10,000 years. Thresher said samples taken would provide ancient climate data for use in global warming projections.

“Modern-day deep-water coral reefs were also found, however, there is strong evidence that this reef system is dying, with most reef-forming coral deeper than 1,300 metres newly dead,” he said.

Though close analysis of samples was still required, Thresher said modelling suggested ocean acidification could be responsible.

“If our analysis identifies this phenomenon as the cause of the reef system’s demise, then the impact we are seeing now below 1,300 metres might extend to the shallower portions of the deep-reefs over the next 50 years, threatening this entire community,” he said.

Rising sea temperatures are blamed on global warming caused by the build-up in the atmosphere of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide — which is also blamed for higher acidity in sea water.

A UN report warned in 2007 that Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, described as the world’s largest living organism, could be killed by climate change within decades.

The World Heritage site and major tourist attraction, stretching over more than 345,000 square kilometres (133,000 square miles) off Australia’s east coast, could become “functionally extinct”, the report said.

Barack Obama Supreme Court Case Jan 10

01/09/2009: PRESS RELEASE - Berg states U.S. Supreme Court has “not” made a public decision regarding Berg vs. Obama U.S. Supreme Court Case

(Lafayette Hill, PA – 01/09/09) - Philip J. Berg, Esquire, the Attorney who filed suit against Barack H. Obama challenging Senator Obama’s lack of “qualifications” to serve as President of the United States and his case, Berg vs. Obama, [is in the U.S. Supreme Court with two (2) Conferences scheduled on 1/09/09 & 1/16/09] announced today that the U.S. Supreme Court has “not” made a public decision yet regarding his case.
Berg said, “I am making these remarks because of the ‘wrong’ statements circulating that the case of Berg vs. Obama in the U.S. Supreme Court has been dismissed.  We checked with the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday afternoon, January 9th and “no” decision has been made.  We will have to wait until at least Monday for the decision regarding what took place at the Conference on January 9th.
Please wait with us.  Hopefully, the U.S. Supreme Court will grant our Writ of Certiorari as there is nothing more important than “our” U.S. Constitution.”
Berg continued, “We are committed to continuing litigation until the truth of Obama being “not qualified” for President comes out.  The Obama candidacy is the biggest “HOAX” every put forth to the citizens of the United States in 230 years.
In addition to the current case in the U.S. Supreme Court, we have or will have:

  1. A case filed two [2] months ago captioned Berg vs. Obama, said case “under seal” so I cannot comment further;
  2. The case of Hollister vs. Barry Soetoro a/k/a Barack Hussein Obama, filed last week in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia; said case being an Interpleader case with the Plaintiff a retired Colonel from the U.S. Air Force who is questioning whether to obey or disobey an order if Obama recalls him, based upon whether or not Obama is a “qualified” President; and
  3. If Obama is sworn in as President, we will file a Petition for Writ of  “Quo Warranto,” a case that will challenge Obama as being ineligible to serve as President because he is “not qualified.”

More and more people are aware of the fact that Obama does not meet the ‘qualifications.’  When the truth finally comes out, individuals including Barack Hussein Obama, Michelle Obama, Howard Dean [Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC)], other top officials of the DNC and senior campaign staff of Obama’s campaign should be brought into the criminal justice system, indicted and tried with incarceration for those convicted.”
