The Zoo Northwest Florida has secured funding to stay open through the winter and is in talks with an unidentified investor who may relieve the zoo’s budgetary woes.

“It’s somebody who has a private zoo in Connecticut. We are still in discussions with her. She has made an initial loan (of $100,000) to the zoo,” said Danyelle Lantz, executive director of the 24-year-old, 50-acre Gulf Breeze animal park. “She has the best intentions. She’s really passionate about animals. She wants to see the zoo reach its potential to serve this community.”

Lantz would not identify the potential investor. The Zoo is about $4 million in debt, and the woman has until March to decide whether to help.

The $100,000 loan gives the zoo some breathing room, Lantz said.

The zoo has received $125,000 from the Santa Rosa County Commission, and another $125,000 from Escambia County. Escambia has delivered $50,000, with $50,000 more expected in January and the final $25,000 due in March.

“Because of the timing of the funding from Escambia and attendance falling a little this winter, we were afraid we were going to fall a little short,” Lantz said.

The potential donor “sounds like a lifeline, and we’ve been looking for a lifeline,” said Pensacola resident Lois Benson, who is on the attraction’s board of directors. “Anything that offers some financial security for keeping the zoo open is something we need to explore.”

Benson said she has not been involved in the discussions, and she does not know the potential donor.

Dave Robau, a Gulf Breeze resident who visits the zoo about once a month, also welcomed the help.

“That’s fantastic,” said Robau, 38. “For someone outside of our area to be interested goes to show the regional appeal of the zoo.”
