You usually have a bit of time when a ship starts to sink, so just remember to think everything through clearly and you’ll make better judgement calls

Be on the ships deck.  Being below the deck is the worst thing that you can in a sinking ship. There are a lot more hazards below deck and you can easily get trapped in rooms or pockets of water. head up to the ships deck as fast as you can and resist the urge to head back down

Swim away from ship. The idea that when a boat sinks it sucks down all that is around it has been suggested to be false when people have performed crude tests. However, there is no way of really knowing for sure as every sinking is different, but people how have escaped sinking ships have sometimes talked about being sucked down with it. To rather be safe than sorry, move at least 60 meters away from the sinking ship

Stay together. If there is no lifeboat to get into, ensure that everyone huddles in a group in the water. This will maximise your chances of being spotted by passing boats or people launching rescue attempts, it will reduce your risk of predator attack and will help everyone keep as much body heat as possible.
