Swing Better Golf Better Dec 30

Most golfers will say the hardest part of their game is focus. Often overlooked in golf is the mental game. Ever noticed the guy who breaks 80 every single time? Why is that? Practice, they practice. What they don’t tell you, is what they practice at. When you are talking about a game that is referred to as 90% mental and 10% talent you have to work on your mental toughness. When overcoming that mental side of golf, do you try to change your equipment, the time at which you play, maybe even they guys you play with. Here are some tips that are going to help you be, the golfer, you always wanted to be.

The tempo of golf is often a distraction for golfers, you are stuck behind a slow foursome DISTRACTING or maybe the guys behind you are rushing you DISTRACTING and you feel that pressure to golf faster. Let your your tempo dictate your game! Not the tempo of the people around you. The tempo of your swing is so important; to achieve the desired results. How do I find MY tempo you ask? A golfer can find their tempo by doing these simple things:

SLOW DOWN!! I repeat slow down, everyone thinks the speed at which you swing dictates how far and accurate your ball will move. This is true is some instances, but, for the sake of this article we will not be discussing those concepts. The tempo we are going to discuss today, is going to deal with how you approach every single shot in your game, you need to have the same back swing, contact, and follow through on every swing. How are you going to practice this TEMPO? Go to the driving range and practice with one club at a time. First hit 20 range balls with your driver, next hit 20 range balls with your 9 iron, Next your 3 wood and your 8 iron follow this method until you have hit every club in your bag. In your back Swing you want to make sure you are coming to the same point every time. When you hit the ball you should be contacting at the same speed every time. People often think that the club should dictate your tempo, this could not be further from the truth. You really want to be swinging all of your clubs at the same speed, you will see great improvement on how well you make contact with the ball. Follow through is the same as your back swing you need to follow through the same on every shot. How you follow through directly affect your accuracy. When you focus on these three techniques you will find that your mental game will improve.

After the practice on the driving range is done you will want to head to the chipping green. You will want to work with your Wedge, 60deg, 8I, and 9I. Practice 100 chips with each club. When you start in the deep stuff focus on yout tempo and making sure you land every ball on the green. While working on chipping focus on your tempo, hit the ball the same every time. Remember chipping should be another tool in your arsenal and not the final result. Many careers have been made from singles and doubles hitters it is not just the home run hitters that decide how games turnout. If you can keep your mind focused on the task at hand you are going to chip and hit the green every time. The 8i and 9i will be used to work out the tempo of the bump and run technique. Tempo is still your main focus you are just using a club for a different shot, the tempo is still the same though. Block out what is going on around you and focus on your tempo!! It would be like you are still hitting one of your wedges, you change clubs not the tempo!!

Putting Putting Putting! Why is this a hard thing to understand? Now we have gone from the Driving range to the chipping green to the putting green. While practicing don’t worry about how far or where the ball goes work on keeping your tempo the same every time. You putt the same every time, you will not be changing your swing ever. The only thing about putting that changes is the distance. Start by sinking 10 putts in a row from 1ft away after you have done this, move out to 2ft, repeat until you sink 10 in a row from 10ft away. Tempo is key when you are trying to stay focused.

The goal for these exercises is to teach your to go through the same steps every time. When you are working on you tempo you need to understand that you are separating your self from the game; you are working on you. If you focus on the tempo you will see results!! The game is 90% mental; set a clock in your mind that only allows for the same tempo no matter when or where you are golfing. When your body starts to do the same thing every single time, your mind will become more focused on the task at hand.

Eliminate the Back Swing Dip From Your Golf Game Dec 25

The PurePoint Golf swing theory points you in the right direction and gives you a system of fundamentals to measure yourself against. In golf this is very important; however situations arise where you can not figure out why you are having certain difficulties. Whether your difficulty is hitting behind the ball or hitting the ball thin, sometimes we are clueless to where the problem lies.

We teach a fairly horizontal swing plane in comparison to most. Even though there are major benefits to this version of the swing certain complications can arise very quickly. This golf tip in particular was designed to keep golfers from hitting behind the ball. Our objective is to inform you of all areas of the golf swing, so that when certain situations arise, you can adjust accordingly. And ultimately checkpoints pre-established.

  • The player(s) back shoulder in his/her backswing dips down; meaning that the back shoulder is lowering towards the ground. This is difficult to do when you have no lateral movement or weight shift back and away from the target, as we teach. However, this is super common among players who have a horizontal swing plane. The common tendency is to lower the back shoulder as your swing plane becomes more horizontal.
  • Please understand that if you dip your back shoulder in your backswing this could cause several different problems in you swing. Your timing, hand position at impact, weight shift through the ball, and follow-through position can all be negatively affected.

Solution

  • Fortunately there is simple solution. Go to the practice range and take a golf ball. Place the golf ball underneath your back foot (please make sure that ½ the ball is in the ground so that you don’t fall). If a ball is uncomfortable use a towel or something that is at least an inch off the ground. The ball/object should be placed under your back heel in order to ensure that you have no weight transfer and that your back shoulder does not dip in your backswing.
  • Then simply take your usual swing. If you choose you can hit a ball or you can just take a couple practice swings. First, focus on not dropping your shoulder in your backswing (keep your back shoulder up and not down). I guarantee that if you master this drill you’ll make solid contact with the ball on a more consistent basis.
  • This drill will cause you to practice a swing with no weight shift back and away from your target and simultaneously help you with dipping your back shoulder.

Practice this drill and be aware that if you are having difficulty hitting behind the ball at any point in your game, the problem could lie in shoulder position in your backswing. To learn more go to PurePoint Golf Instruction

Start at Your Equipment if You want to Hit Long Golf Drives Dec 16

Every golf hole starts at the tee. If you’re having problems driving, then you’re starting every single hole at a disadvantage. You might scramble your par with a great putt, but you could well be putting for birdies if your driving is up to scratch.

For nearly all golfers, long golf drives and consistency with the driver are far from being impossible. Being long from the tee is a lot easier than most people understand.

With the modern golf ball and Titanium driver, long drives come from hitting the ball on a high launch angle and getting the best angle of descent. It’s not about wormburners anymore. Long golf drives now come from high launch and long carry.

Sure, with their 120 plus mph club speed and pure striking, pros can still get height on the ball, even with low lofts on their drivers. For most club players though, using drivers with extra loft will increase both length and consistency. Most average players would For the majority of club golfers, drivers with with a loft of between 11 to 14 degrees will give the best results.

Fitting the correct shaft is vital when it comes to being consistent with the driver. The shaft plays a crucial function in all your clubs, but play the wrong shaft in your driver and any miss-hits are expensive.

Most golfers now play graphite shafts in their drivers. Sadly, many golfers also play shafts that are too stiff for their swing speeds. That might account for the most common miss amongst club golfers, the slice. Play a shaft that is too stiff and you’ll almost certainly suffer from a slice.

This has a lot to do with the popular misconception that graphite shafts are too soft. That might have been the case 10 years ago, but current graphite shaft fiber patterns have given us exceptional models with excellent flex profiles.

The majority of golfers would improve their driving by playing lighter driver shafts with softer flex ratings and softer torque profiles. The light-weight will improve swing speed and the medium torque will allow the shaft to load properly during the swing, delivering your driver into the ball with more energy. Longer drives come from higher energy.

Launch angles are also affected by the rigidity of the shaft tip. Your trajectories will suffer if you use a shaft which is too tip-stiff. Launching the ball on the optimum angle is where a long golf drive comes from. Bear in mind, we’re looking for a strong flight, not a low worm burner.

Playing the right combination of driver head and shaft specifications is crucial to consistently long golf drives. Your clubs should help your game, not amplify any swing faults.

Top 3 Golf Balls Oct 13

A Game of golf is becoming more and more popular; its not just the professionals that play anymore. If you visit the local golf course these days you are now more likely to see them trying to improve their skill set. This being said though what is the best golf ball around? Let us have a look at the top three most popular balls.

Titleist

These are in all likelihood from a brandmark view the best known ball. The Titleist Pro V1 is by far in all likelihood the better ball you can play with and it is in fact what a lot of the pro players play with. Taking this into account I feel that you have to be well on top of your game to play with these kinds of balls.

Callaway

I do think that the Callaway balls are the one to use for practice games, games that are not really too serious. The price of these balls are reasonable, but on some occasions depending on which model you would like you may have to go into a gold specialist store.

Nike

Nike is probably the biggest brand out of all three of them, Nike have millions of dollars and with that comes a huge selection of different golf balls. You can probably pick up the golf balls in any high street store, as we all know Nike knows how to distribute their products. The best balls in their range though have to be the Nike One Black and Platinum and on top of this they are all very reasonably priced.

If you are looking to better your game I would ideally look at getting the best quality ball to begin with as you do not want to end up picking up bad habits.

Hitting the Ball with Accuracy, Confidence, and Consistency Oct 10

“Driving the Golf Ball with Confidence, Accuracy, and Consistency”

The three most important elements to the game of golf is:

  1. Driving the golf ball in play.
  2. Putting the golf ball with consistent speed control (distance).
  3. Pitching the golf ball with loft.

Let’s concentrate on what I consider the MOST important aspect to the game of golf, DRIVING THE GOLF BALL IN PLAY. This part of golf is the number one confidence builder in the sport. As you probably know and have experienced, your score adds up quickly if you hit your tee shots out of play.

Here is a bold proclomation for you -if you read this article/special report every time, just before you play a round, your friends will think they are playing with Joe Durant. Joe has led the PGA Tour in driving accuracies for the past two years. So far this year, he is averaging 79% of the fairways every time he plays 18 holes of golf.

If you are going to change the way you drive the golf ball you will need to implement the following four fundamentals:

  1. THE PICTURE
  2. PROPER DRIVER
  3. CORRECT TEE HEIGHT
  4. CORRECT SWING PLANE

1. THE PICTURE

If you can see it, you can have it. Before you take your driver, or any club for that matter, out of your bag, you need to start seeing what you want the golf ball to look like during its journey down the fairway. Of the millions of words my mother (the first woman to teach at a golf school in the United States) passed on to me, the one phrase that has stayed with me all of these years is THE PICTURE. You must have a picture in your mind of how you want the ball to fly through the air and where you want it to wind up. When you have a driver in your hands, you have to pick out an exact area you want the ball to land on. IF YOU DON’T SEE THE PICTURE, YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE.

Important Tip: During the course of a round of golf, you can find yourself driving the ball well, but all of the sudden you are faced with a difficult driving hole. Shortly after I turned professional, I played a practice round with Tommy Bolt the 1958 U.S. Open Champion. We came to great par four, 435 yards long, water down the right side of the fairway from the tee to the green, out of bounds markers down the entire left side of the fairway from the tee to the green. After I teed my golf ball up I said to Tommy , “What do you do here with O.B. left and water right?” Tommy looked me straight in the eye and said “Son, if you see the water and the O.B. markers, you better go find another line of work.”

That stuck with me to this day, and I wanted to pass it on to you. Don’t worry about the challenges, just think about what you want the ball to do. I have benefited immensely during my career, and I want you to benefit from this too.

2. PROPER DRIVER

Now that you can see the picture, let’s see if you brought the correct brush to paint with. If you are still trying to buy 20 more yards every time you walk into a golf shop. It is time to stop-NOW! If you own a driver that is metal, has a graphite shaft, and the grip is new then you have what is needed to send the golf ball straight down the fairway.

Let’s back up a foot or two. The loft on the golf club will play a major role in how accurate you are. If you are struggling with your driver you might consider buying a driver with at least 10-12 degrees of loft. The less loft a driver has the more you are apt to slice and hook the ball. If you are driving the ball well you can buy a driver with less loft.

An important side note: If you are driving the golf ball short, low and to the right the shaft might be too stiff. If you are driving the golf ball too high and to the left the shaft might be too weak.

Another item to consider if you have small hands, have the club repair shop regrip all of your grips with either a junior grip or a small grip. If your hands are large, have the shop regrip you clubs with oversize grips.

Bottom Line – worry about getting the ball in the fairway first, and then focus on distance generation. Chances are, you own the equipment right now, that will give you the fairway shots you’re looking for. Remember – It’s the swing, not the equipment. The equipment helps once you have a good swing, but you’ll never FIX your swing with an equipment upgrade.

3.CORRECT TEE HEIGHT

The tee height does not seem like such a big deal, but it plays a huge roll in whether or not you drive the golf ball consistently down the fairway. Something so simple can often be the biggest challenge.

The two major mistakes are teeing the golf ball too low or teeing the golf ball too high. You may have heard that golf is a game of opposites. This is a really good example. Let me explain why. If you are constantly swinging your driver too vertical into the ground in the downswing, you probably tee the golf ball to low. Almost all golfers with a vertical driver swing fear swinging underneath the golf ball so they tee the ball low in hopes of catching it square. For those of you with this challenge, the next time you are on the golf course, tee the golf ball up a little higher and sit back a little bit more on your heels and keep your weight there in the downswing. After your shot has landed, look down to see if your tee is still in the ground. If you are always conscience of leaving the tee in the ground, you will not pop your tee shots up anymore.

If you are topping your tee shots to the right you might have the ball teed too high because you are trying to hit the ball on the upswing. The next time you go out to play, tee the ball down a little. After the golf ball has landed, make sure your weight is on your left foot and meaning you have transferred your weight correctly.

4. CORRECT SWING PLANE

With this final tip I feel confident you will be on your way to driving the golf ball straighter and with more consistency. The golf club in your bag that swings the most vertical, (up and down) is your sand wedge. The golf club that swings the most horizontal (around you-baseball swing) is your driver. The mistake I have seen most amateur golfers make is that they swing their driver like their sand wedge and they swing their sand wedge like their driver.

A couple of things to remember when you are addressing the driver:

  1. Chin up
  2. Turn your right shoulder in the back swing level
  3. Swing the golf club around you/not up and down
  4. Leave the tee in the ground after you hit the ball

When you are ready to begin your backswing, keep your swing thoughts to a minimum. Just focus on swinging more horizontal.

At the beginning of this article I promised you would drive the ball more with more confidence, accuracy, and more consistent if you read this article every time before you tee it up this summer. This stuff seems simple, but give it a try and send me an email letting me know the results. You’ll get some really excellent results.

Whether you are just getting started in the sport or you are a seasoned professional, here are some golf tips that you are really going to be interested in.

Golf Tips: Hitting a Longer Drive

When it comes to tips for hitting a golf ball, one of the best tips for hitting a golf ball that you can get involves hitting a longer drive. This is one of the most sought after skills in the game of golf, because after all, the longer your drive the better off you are going to be in any game, as long as you are good with accuracy.

First you are going to need to buy a driver club that is going to best suit your golf swing, and also get some balls. Make sure that you stick with a well known brand of ball and one that fits into your budget of course. There are many different brand names that are available but basically whatever you choose, you just want to make sure that it has 100 compression.

Now you are ready to get going, and you really have to work on your timing if you want to get a longer drive. After you have practiced and you have the timing down, now you can work on increasing the speed of your swing, because this is really what is going to give your ball lift off.

Get Focused

Another of the most important golf tips for hitting a golf ball is to get focused. No matter if you are teeing off or putting into the hole, you want to have a focus for your eyes to lock onto. Otherwise you are going to be looking around at everything, will lose focus, and probably your game will suffer as a result.

Keep your eyes on the flag pole while hitting the ball when you are teeing off. These are just two of the many different tips for hitting a golf ball that you can learn.

Picking your Golf Equipment Sep 01

All sports have their own attire or equipment you use to play the game effectively. The basic golf equipment you need is a golf ball and some golf clubs. Pretty simple really, but you can venture off into many other things suchs as golf bags, golf club headcovers or even the more expensive but better technology hybrid golf clubs. Golf balls have tiny dimples on them to improve the distance they travel, and are essentially just small little white balls. The actual golf club is made of two components – the shaft and the head and both can different depending on if it is going on a putter or driver.

The golf club driver is definately one of the first golf clubs that you get in your set. This is used on the initial hit of the hole to drive the ball a good distance and get the closest possible to the end goal. Different landscapes require different golf clubs to make the right drive. You will then also need your golf club wedges and irons, and putters to complete your golf club set. If you want to buy all the golf clubs new, then any golf store should have what you are looking for. For those starting out, a used golf club iron set may be the perfect tool to get you to learn the game and improve before buying expensive new clubs.

After you purchase your golf clubs and balls, you will need the other visual and convenience factored equipment. These include the golf club bag, which conveniently will hold all your clubs to take around the course. Your golf shoes and golf attire will be something you need to look at next, so you are comfortable while playing the eighteen holes. Finally, you have smaller items like the golf club tee and golf club headcovers. The headcovers are optional and not everyone uses them. The Golf Cart is the best item for convenience as you can just zip around the course without the need to walk all the way. Callaway Golf Clubs Aug 29

Golf clubs from Callaway are one of, if not the most renowned in the golf world. This is quite an achievement as they have not been established for as long as many of it’s competitors.  In fact the company was founded in the early 1980′s when Ely Callaway bought a share in Hickory Stick and by 1982 Callaway Golf was born.

Perhaps it is the company’s innovative side that has transformed them into such a big player in the golfing community.  The large Big Bertha driver that the company launched a few years ago was ridiculed at first but now adorns many a fairway all over the world. And Fusion Technology, displayed so proudly on many of their clubs is another example of forward thinking, by using multiple materials to achieve near perfection in the golf club.

When it comes to choosing golf club sets all the technological terms can be a bit confusing, especially to the novice or amateur player. On the company website many of the technologies are explained in detail and you can see just how far golf clubs have changed over the last 20 or 30 years. If you are a keen golfer you will appreciate the great importance of the weight distribution in the club head and Callaway have addressed this in many of their irons by cutting a channel in the back of the club head, which has the effect of altering the center of gravity. By lowering the center of gravity the “sweetspot” is effectively made bigger and the club stabilty improved.

They have also applied this keen innovation to the golf ball, replacing the traditional dimpled ball to one covered with hexagon shapes which improves the aerodynamics.  But it is probably the improvements made to Callaway golf clubs that is of most interest to the golf enthusiast.
