Skateboarding has become one of the most popular pastimes in America. When I was growing up the skateboarding craze was slowly overtaking BMX for the top spot in the world of extreme sports. Because skateboarding can be done anywhere and for significant less money it has become the standard alternative sport of choice. But just like any other sport, skateboarding is a skill and requires instruction, desire, and practice. You can get all the expensive equipment and skateboarding trick tips you want, but if you don't have the three necessities, you will never be the next Tony Hawk or Kevin Staab. Be sure you even step on that board make sure you have all three of these key elements:

Instruction: Skateboarding is a very anti-authority type of sport. It's rooted in rebellion and civil disobedience so it's kind of ironic that there is actually instruction available for something that grew out of the empty swimming pools of Southern California. However, nowadays you can save yourself a lot of time, angst, and skin by getting some expert instruction for little or no money. There are thousands of videos and DVDs available to show you the basics.

Your friends will probably be able to teach you the basics like an Ollie and Kickflip, but once you master the basics and want to move on to more advanced tricks you will probably want a professional teacher.

The board spins and rotates 180 degrees around as you are airborne, and then as the board lands on the floor you also land on the board with both feet nicely apart and balanced so that you catch the board just right and keep your balance.

Learn from an expert teacher. There are many opportunities to learn from a teacher who is good at skating. But one and one instruction can be expensive.

Get skateboarding trick tips from experts and then practice incessantly. Practice until you reach the point of utter frustration and exhaustion. Then, practice some ore. Skateboarding is hard core. It requires expert instructions, undying passion, and mind-numbing amounts of practice. However, if you have the drive and determination to keep at it, then one day future skateboarding stars will be buying your skateboarding trick tips on DVD and video

Pack the Right Snow Camping Gear Feb 03

If you are thinking about the exciting time that you can have winter camping, you should learn about a few of the items that are must haves for your outing. If you consider yourself a professional snow camper, this list almost certainly isn’t for you. The list of winter camping gear here is created for beginner campers to head out fully organized to enjoy themselves.

Apart from one, all of the items to be listed in this article can fit easily into your travel pack. That’s the mindset to have when packing for a winter camping trip; it all has to fit into your backpack.

The first of these items almost certainly won’t fit into your backpack, since it’s your backpack itself. The first thing you ought to get if you are new to snow camping and winter camping gear is your backpack to house all of the necessities that you must have when you get where you’re going. The majority of snow camping outings consist of hiking and then setting up camp, so you need to have a pack that’s as mobile as it is roomy. Among the better brand names of such packs are Gregory Baltoro and Mountainsmith. You can find these at various shops and also merchants that sell camping equipment online.

For any camping trip, most specialists and even those that only go camping a lot will inform you that you should always pack a Swiss army knife. When you have a multi task tool like this, you can do all kinds of things that may be challenging otherwise. The handiness of it is the compact design. Some of the more impressive features include a couple of knives, a fish scaler, a saw and some screwdrivers. The possibilities for their use can be far broader than the tools contained within.

If you intend on being out for a while, you must consider the things that you will truly need if you want to survive the elements. You can’t go for any significant length of time without water. When you are out in the snow, you’re going to need a decent pot in order to have sanitary water to drink and a means to cook some of the food you’ll likely take along with you.

A good way to keep that strength up is by packing along fatty foods and assorted snacks that have a good deal of simple sugars and carbohydrates. Even something as basic as a chocolate bar can help to keep you going in blustery conditions.

You can have a great time snow camping if you plan appropriately. This isn’t something that should be taken lightly, as these excursions could become serious if you do not take the time to prepare as you ought to.

The Perspective of a Russian Immigrant Dec 11

The Perspective Of A Russian Immigrant

In the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, I was taught to believe individual pursuits are selfish and sacrificing for the collective good is noble.

In kindergarten we sang songs about Lenin, the leader of the Socialist Revolution. In school we learned about the beautiful socialist system, where everybody is equal and everything is fair; about ugly capitalism, where people are exploited and treat each other like wolves in the wilderness.

Life in the USSR modeled the socialist ideal. God-based religion was suppressed and replaced with cultlike adoration for political figures.

The government-assigned salary of the proletariat (blue-collar worker) was 30%-50% higher than any professional. Without incentive to improve their life, professionals drank themselves to oblivion. They — engineers, lawyers, doctors, teachers — earned a government-determined salary that barely covered the necessities, mainly food.

Raising children was a hardship. It took four to six adults (parents and grandparents) to support a child. The usual size of the postwar family was one or two children. Every woman had the right to have an abortion and most of them did, often without anesthesia.

There is a comparative historical reality that plays out the consequences of two competing ideologies: life in the USSR and in America.

When the march to the worker’s paradise — the Socialist Revolution — began in 1917, many people emigrated from Russia to the U.S.

In the USSR, economic equality was achieved by redistributing wealth, ensuring that everyone remained poor, with the exception of those doing the redistributing. Only the ruling class of communist leaders had access to special stores, medicine and accommodations that could compare to those in the West.

The rest of the citizenry had to deal with permanent shortages of food and other necessities, and had access to free but inferior, unsanitary and low-tech medical care. The egalitarian utopia of equality, achieved by the sacrifice of individual self-interest for the collective good, led to corruption, black markets, anger and envy.

Government-controlled health care destroyed human dignity.

Chairman Nikita Khrushchev released facts about Stalin and his purges. People learned of the horrific purge of more than 20 million citizens, murdered as enemies of the state.

Those who left Russia found a different set of values in America: freedom of religion, speech, individual pursuits, the right to private property and free enterprise. The majority of those immigrants achieved a better life for themselves and their children in this capitalist land.

These opportunities let the average immigrant live a better life than many elites in the Soviet Communist Party. The freedom to pursue personal self-interest led to prosperity. Prosperity generated charity, benefiting the collective good. The descendants of those immigrants are now supporting policies that move America away from the values that gave so many immigrants the chance of a better life. Policies such as nationalized medicine, high tax rates and government intrusion into free enterprise are being sold to us under the socialistic motto of collective salvation. Socialism has bankrupted and failed every society, while capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system.

There is no perfect society. There are no perfect people. Critics say that greed is the driving force of capitalism. My answer is that envy is the driving force of socialism. Change to socialism is not an improvement on the imperfections of the current system. The slogans of “fairness and equality” sound better than the slogans of capitalism. But unlike at the beginning of the 20th century, when these slogans and ideas were yet to be tested, we have accumulated history and reality. Today we can define the better system not by slogans, but by looking at the accumulated facts. We can compare which ideology leads to the most oppression and which brings the most opportunity.

When I came to America in 1980 and experienced life in this country, I thought it was fortunate that those living in the USSR did not know how unfortunate they were. Now in 2009, I realize how unfortunate it is that many Americans do not understand how fortunate they are. They vote to give government more and more power without understanding the consequences.

Guide to Finding Discount Hotels for Last Minute Trips Jul 07

Traveling at the last minute can be inconvenient: you need to pack up a lot of clothes in order to get to where you want to go, but you need only a little time to make sure that you pack your clothes well and that you don’t miss anything or forget any of your necessities and toiletries.

You need to get your tickets, have a ready schedule of all the things that you are supposed to do ? and book a hotel without having to spend a lot of money on having a last minute trip. Many travel agents and also hotels understand the concept that we tend to do things at the very last minute, so they increase their rates so in order to get more money from last minute travelers.

There are ways that you can avoid this, however, whether you are anticipating a lot of last minute travel, or you’re already in the fray and looking for a place to stay in. there will be no dearth of discounts especially if you are in a tourist friendly city, where a lot of hotels just can’t wait to get clients or customers no matter what time of the year, no matter how long it took for you to make the booking.

One way to avoid ever getting bad rates is to actually talk to your travel agent beforehand and ask for discount rates for hotels just in case the day comes when you actually need those discount rates for some last minute travel. Your agent may have contacts at some hotels, and at some hotel chains that will extend their services abroad, so you can talk to your travel agent about what rates are good even before you need them.

Another way to get good discount hotels for last minute travel is to do last minute travel during non-peak months in a certain country or location. Of course this looks counter intuitive, but if you suddenly want to go on a vacation and want to go immediately, and you are at a non-peak time, then this can be a great way for you to save money, and by simply going during a time when all hotels will have discounts anyway.

Still another way is to book your last minute hotel stay online. There are actually many online discounts for hotel bookings to begin with, and last minute bookings may even have some special discounts attached to them as long as you are not bumping up against a hotel that has a lot of guests on its reservations list. You will also be able to access hotels on the internet direct, in the kiosks at your international or local airport, so should you be at the airport and waiting for your departure, or if you have to wait for another flight, you are able to get online and make your bookkings.

Lastly, if you’re already at a location and it’s the last minute, look for a hostel or pension house first. This way, you can spend the night or the first two nights at a decent location, keep yourself safe and sleeping soundly, and then get to see the sights while looking for a hotel. Who knows? You may actually like your cheaper lodgings, especially if you’re after the sights all the time and will spend more time outside than in!
