During the Civil War Kansas was the first state to officially recruit and train military units of black soldiers.  Fort Scott was active with military personnel during the Civil War.

Idea #1: The Buford Pusser Home and Museum - Adamsville, Tennessee.  Buford Pusser had a law career and was also appointed Adamsville Police Chief, and later elected Sheriff of McNairy County.  He survived an assassination attempt.  The shots missed Buford but had struck his wife Pauline in the head.  By the time Buford left his Sheriff’s post in 1970, his career was skyrocketing.  In 1966, Buford was named Outstanding Young Man by the local Jaycees.
